In the Scandinavian (at least Swedish - can't speak for the others) tradition, Santa is a bearded old gnome who lives in the woods and shows up after sundown on Christmas Eve with presents for the kids. I still remember the moment, around age 5 or 6, when I realized that Santa was really my Glögg-swilling uncle Sven-Olof in a fake beard.

Needless to say I love this story.

Now I'm thinking of my dad as a bearded old gnome who came out of the woods.

Love this, Jan. If only for the phrase "Glögg-swilling uncle Sven-Olof." That's worth the price of admission alone.
